Sister Leo Marie McDermott, IHM

March 28, 1909 – February 25, 1983

Sister Leo Marie McDermott, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, died Friday, February 25, 1983, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Carbondale, Pennsylvania, after an illness.

She was born on March 28, 1909 in Scranton, Pennsylvania, and given the name Regina. She was the daughter of the late Bernard and Hannah Walsh McDermott. She entered the IHM Congregation on March 18, 1926, received the religious habit on August 15, 1926, and made profession of her vows on August 15, 1928.

Sister Leo Marie served as a teacher at the following schools: St. Paul Elementary School in Scranton, PA; St. Peter Cathedral School in Scranton, PA; Nativity of Our Lord School in Scranton, PA; St. Thomas Aquinas School in Archbald, PA; Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Elementary School in Altoona, PA; St. Joseph School in Renovo, PA; St. Ephrem School in Brooklyn, NY; Our Lady of Good Counsel Elementary School in Inwood, NY; Holy Trinity School in Poughkeepsie, NY; Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Elementary School in Asbury Park, NJ; as well as at schools located in Manhasset, NY.

Sister also served as the school librarian at St. Paul Elementary School in Scranton, PA.

From 1983 until the time of her death, Sister Leo Marie served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent in Scranton, PA.

She is preceded in death by five brothers, Joseph, Arthur, Leo, Robert and Edward, and three sisters, Agnes Cunningham, Alice Moore and Alice McDermott.

She is survived by three sisters, Margaret O’Malley of Scranton, PA, Katherine Hartman of Hackettstown, NJ, and Marie O’Hora of Woodbridge, VA; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be Monday, February 28 in St. Paul’s Church with Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. Interment will follow at St. Catherine’s Cemetery, Moscow, Pennsylvania. Friends may call at the Marian Convent on Sunday afternoon from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m., or in the evening from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.
