Sister Josephine Joy, IHM

Sister Josephine Joy, IHM, (formerly known as Sister M. John Berchmans) of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Saturday, July 7, 2001 at the Marian Convent in Scranton, PA.
She was born on May 6, 1916 in Fredonia, NY, and was the daughter of the late Frank and Carrie Barone Joy. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1949, made temporary profession of her vows on May 8, 1952, and final profession of her vows on August 2, 1955.
Sister Josephine served as a teacher at the following schools: Marywood Seminary in Scranton, PA, from 1949 to 1950; St. Ann School in Scranton, PA, from 1963 to 1966; Holy Trinity School in Poughkeepsie, NY; as well as at schools located in Baltimore, MD, Manhasset, NY, and Mount Holly, NJ.
Sister Josephine served as principal at Our Lady of Mount Carmel School in Asbury Park, NJ.
Sister also served as a school minister at St. Raphael Elementary School in St. Petersburg, FL; and director of religious education Little Flower Church in Bethesda, MD.
Sister Josephine served as a prayer minister at Little Flower Convent, Bethesda, MD from 1994 to 1999, and at the Marian Convent from 2000 until the time of her death.
She received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in social studies, and a Master of Science Degree in religious education from Marywood College.
She is preceded in death by three brothers, Dr. John, Russel and Anthony, and four sisters, Sarah, Agnes, Rose Talamo and Nina Conti.
She is survived by two brothers Dr. Charles of Fairview, PA, and Frank of Denver, CO, a sister, Angeline of Irving, NY, nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be Wednesday, July 11 at 10:30 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at the Marian Convent followed by interment at St. Catherine’s Cemetery, Moscow. Friends may call at the Marian Convent on Tuesday, July 10, between 2:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.
