Sister Ethel Marie Gavin, IHM

May 5, 1907 – May 22, 1990

Sister Ethel Marie Gavin, IHM, of the Congregation of Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, died on Tuesday, May 22, 1990, at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania, after an illness.

She was born on May 5, 1907 in Scranton, Pennsylvania, and was the daughter of the late Stephen and Mary Ellen Harrison Gavin. She entered the IHM Congregation on July 2, 1923, received the religious habit on December 28, 1923, and made profession of her vows on August 15, 1925.

Sister Ethel Marie served as a teacher at the following schools: St. Rose Elementary School in Carbondale, PA; St. Thomas Aquinas Elementary School in Archbald, PA; Our Lady of Peace Elementary School in Clark’s Green, PA; and St. Clare Elementary School in Scranton, PA.

Sister served as principal at Sacred Heart of Mary Elementary School in Jermyn, PA, and St. Cecilia Elementary School in Exeter, PA. She also served as superior at Sacred Heart of Mary Convent in Jermyn, PA, and at St. Patrick Catechetical Center in Milford, PA.

From 1985 until the time of her death, Sister Ethel Marie served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.

She is preceded in death by three brothers, Andrew, James and Stephen, and two sisters, Rose Crane and Kathleen O’Hara.

She is survived by a sister, Mrs. Margaret Mullarkey of Scranton, PA, nieces and nephews; grandnieces and grandnephews.

The funeral will be on Friday, May 25 with Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. in the Marian Convent Chapel. Interment will follow at St. Catherine’s Cemetery, Moscow, Pennsylvania. Friends may call on Thursday afternoon at the Marian Convent.

Sister Ethel Marie Gavin, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, died Tuesday evening at Marian Convent after an illness.

A native of Scranton, daughter of the late Stephen and Mary Ellen Harrison Gavin, she entered the IHM Congregation on July 2, 1923, was received into the novitiate on Dec. 28, 1923, and made profession of her vows on Aug. 15, 1925. During her years in ministry, Sister Ethel Marie taught both junior high subjects and music and served as principal in Milford, Jermyn, and Exeter. She carried a full teaching load at St. Rose School, Carbondale, St. Thomas’ School, Archbald, and Our Lady of Peace School, Clark’s Green. Most recently she taught music at St. Clare’s School, Scranton, until 1985 when she retired to the Marian Convent for health reasons.

Surviving are a sister, Mrs. Margaret O’Hara Mullarkey, Scranton; nieces and nephews.

Three brothers and four sisters preceded her in death.

The funeral will be Friday with Mass at 9:30 a.m. in Marian Convent Chapel. Interment, St. Catherine’s Cemetery, Moscow.
