Eleanor Flynn, IHM

Sister Eleanor Flynn, IHM, (formerly Sister M. Irene) of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, died Wednesday, December 5, 1984, at the Marian Convent in Scranton, PA.

Born on July 14, 1920 in Scranton, PA, she was the daugther of the late James and Mary Carey Flynn. She entered the IHM Congrega­tion on September 8, 1943, received the religious habit on May 8, 1944, and made profession of her vows on May 8, 1946.

Sister Eleanor served as a teacher at St. Charles Borromeo Elementary School in Sugar Notch, PA, and Our Lady of Perpetual Help Elementary School in Rocky Mount, NC.

Sister served on the support staff at the following institutions: St. Joseph’s Children’s and Maternity Hospital in Scranton, PA; the Marian Convent in Scranton, PA; and St. Joseph’s Hospital in Carbondale, PA.

Sister Eleanor also served in child care for resident children at the Catholic Child Care Center in Hollidaysburg, PA.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Flynn, and three brothers, Paul, Gerard and Harold.

She is survived by two brothers, Robert of Scranton, PA, and James of Stratford, CT, and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be Friday, December 7 with Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. at the Marian Convent. Interment will follow at St. Catherine’s Cemetery, Moscow, PA. Friends may call at the Marian Convent on Thursday afternoon or evening.


Archival Remembrance:

After having taught primary grades for a few years, Sister Eleanor Flynn went into the health care ministry. She served on the staff at St. Joseph Center and the Marian Convent, this city, at St. Joseph Hospital, Carbondale, and at the Catholic Child Care Center in Hollidaysburg.
