Tips for Writing Your Will

  1. Make a list of all your assets, including including investments, properties, bank accounts, and personal property such as art, jewelry, etc.
  2. Review all beneficiary designations of your life insurance, investment and retirement accounts.
  3. If you already have a will, review it every few years especially after major life changes.
  4. At the same time you review your plans, affirm your selection of executor(s), that they are willing and able to complete the task.

Advance knowledge of future gifts to the IHM Sisters would give our Congregation the opportunity to express our thanks, but this is not necessary.

Gifts in Wills

Continue to live the IHM Mission through your Charitable Legacy Gift decisions.

Your gift to the IHM Sisters in your will may be tax deductible for federal and state estate taxes and may place your estate in a lower estate tax bracket.

Plan a Charitable Legacy Gift that could have a tax advantage by naming the IHM Sisters as a Beneficiary.  Your gift will be a blessing to the Sisters and their good works and will be much appreciated by your heirs.

You may name a specific purpose for your gift. For example, you might wish to use it to support the IHM Sisters or to support a specific area of interest, such as retirement.

Please consult your attorney if you feel that a gift to the IHM Sisters in your will is an option you would like to pursue.

The three most common ways to include the IHM Sisters in your will are:

  1. To donate a percentage of your estate
  2. To name a specific dollar amount
  3. To leave a specific piece of property

Suggested language for these options includes: “I give, devise, and bequeath to the Sisters Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary of Scranton, Pennsylvania,…

  1. ___% of my estate.”
  2. $___(specific dollar amount).”
  3. ____(description of property), located at_____(exact location).”

Residue of Your Estate is another option. This means that whatever is left after other bequests have been granted.

Suggested language for this option includes: “All residue of my estate, including real and personal property, I give, devise, and bequeath to the Sisters Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, Scranton Pennsylvania.”
