Sister Mary Peter Burns, IHM

January 21, 1861 – December 24, 1935

Sister Mary Peter Burns, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Tuesday, December 24, 1935 at St. Agnes Place in Elmhurst, PA.

She was born on January 21, 1861 in Pittston, PA, and given the name Elizabeth. She was the daughter of the late Patrick and Mary Cook Burns. She entered the IHM Congregation on August 5, 1891, received the religious habit on December 28, 1891, and made profession of her vows on December 28, 1893.

Sister Mary Peter served as a teacher at the following schools: Holy Rosary School in Scranton, PA; Laurel Hill Academy in Susquehanna, PA; St. Cecilia Elementary School in Exeter, PA; and St. Mary Elementary School in Hollidaysburg, PA.

Sister served as principal at St. Mary Elementary School in Hollidaysburg, PA, for two years.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Patrick.

She is survived by three nieces, Sister M. Ursula Burns, IHM of Holy Rosary Convent in Scranton, PA, Mary and Elizabeth Burns of Pittston, PA; and a nephew, Francis Burns, of Pittston, PA.

The funeral will be Friday, December 27 at 9:30 a.m. at St. Catherine’s Church, Moscow, PA. Interment will follow at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow. Friends may call on Thursday afternoon at St. Agnes Place.
