Sister Mary Patrice Kearney, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Sunday, May 10, 1953, at the Pittston Hospital in Pittston, PA.
She was born on September 11, 1882 in Scranton, PA, and given the name Margaret. She was the daughter of the late Patrick and Bridget Hughes Kearney. She entered the IHM Congregation on August 15, 1904, received the religious habit on December 8, 1904, and made profession of her vows on December 27, 1906.
Sister Mary Patrice served as a teacher at St. Mary Elementary School in Avoca, PA, for twenty-five years. From 1947 until the time of her death, she served as superior of St. Mary’s Convent in Avoca, PA.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Thomas, and four sisters, Catherine Kearney, Bridget Burke, Rose Clifford, and Helen Cannon.
She is survived by a brother, Michael Francis of Scranton, PA; two sisters, Cecilia O’Hara of Midland, PA, and Mary Agnes Kearney of Scranton, PA; and nieces and nephews, including Reverend James Timlin, stationed at St. John the Evangelist Church in Pittston, PA.
The funeral will be Wednesday, May 13 at 9:30 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church in Avoca, PA, to be celebrated by Reverend James Timlin. Interment will follow at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, PA. Friends may call on Tuesday at St. Mary’s Convent, Avoca.
