Sister Maria Patrick Comer, IHM

January 18, 1899 – August 6, 1975

Sister Maria Patrick Comer, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Wednesday, August 6, 1975, at Suburban Hospital in Bethesda, MD, while visiting her family.

She was born on January 18, 1899 in Old Forge, PA, and given the name Margaret. She was the daughter of the late Patrick and Mary Fox Comer. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 7, 1924, received the religious habit on December 29, 1924, and made profession of her vows on August 15, 1926.

Sister Maria Patrick served as a teacher in the following schools: St. Thomas Regional School Providence, RI, from 1926 to 1931; St. Leo Elementary School in Ashley, PA, from 1931 to 1934 and 1938 to 1940; St. Joseph Elementary School in Renovo, PA, from 1934 to 1938; Most Holy Rosary Elementary School in Syracuse, NY, from 1940 to 1947; St. John the Evangelist Elementary School in Pittston, PA, from 1947 to 1949; St. John Elementary School in Susquehanna, PA, from 1949 to 1950; St. Mary of the Assumption Elementary School in Upper Marlboro, MD, from 1950 to 1953; St. Mary of the Mount Elementary School in Pittsburgh, PA, from 1953 to 1959; St. Ambrose Elementary School in Bridgeport, CT, from 1959 to 1963; St. Patrick Elementary School in White Haven, PA, from 1963 to 1967; St. Paul Elementary School in New Bern, NC, from 1967 to 1969; St. Lawrence Elementary School in Williamsport, PA, from 1969 to 1970; St. John the Evangelist Elementary School in Bellefonte, PA, from 1970 to 1972; and St. Thomas Elementary School in Bedford, PA, from 1972 to 1973.

From 1973 until the time of her death, Sister Maria Patrick served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Nell and Mildred (toddler), and a brother, Patrick, Jr.

She is survived by two brothers, Dr. Thomas P. and Francis J., and a sister, Irene, all of Bethesda, MD, and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be held on Monday, August 11 at 9:30 a.m. in the Marian Convent Chapel in Scranton, PA. Interment will follow at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, PA. Friends may call at the Marian Convent on Sunday afternoon or evening.
