Sister Marie Helen Dougherty, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, died on Thursday, August 12, 1982, at the Marian Convent in Scranton, PA.

She was born May 27, 1906 in Scranton, PA, and given the name Mary. She was the daughter of the late Edward and Helen Gerrity Dougherty. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 19, 1926, received the religious habit on December 29, 1926, and made profession of her vows on January 2, 1929.

She earned a registered nursing degree from St. Mary’s (Keller Memorial) Hospital in Scranton, PA, and a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing from Marywood College.

Sister Marie Helen served as Director of Nurses at St. Joseph’s Children’s and Maternity Hospital in Scranton, PA. At St. Joseph’s Hospital in Carbondale, PA, she served as a pharmacy technician and Director of Nursing Services. Sister also served as a nurse at St. Agnes Place in Elmhurst, PA, and at the Marian Convent in Scranton, PA.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Charles.

She is survived by two sisters, Sister M. de Paul Dougherty, IHM, of Scranton, PA, and Alice Fitzgerald of Maspeth, NY; two brothers, Edward Jr. of Long Island, NY, and Joseph of Scranton, PA; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be Saturday, August 14, with Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. at the Marian Convent. Interment will follow at St. Catherine’s Cemetery, Moscow, PA. Friends may call on Friday from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the Marian Convent.
