Sister M. Rose Brice, IHM

October 9, 1866 – February 18, 1929

Sister M. Rose Brice, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Monday, February 18, 1929, at St. Joseph’s Children’s and Maternity Hospital in Scranton, PA.

She was born on October 9, 1866, in Freeland, PA, and given the name Rose Mary. She was the daughter of the late Patrick and Mary Boyle Brice. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 9, 1889, received the religious habit on April 8, 1890, and made profession of her vows on May 24, 1892.

Sister Rose served as the superintendent at St. Joseph’s Foundling Home, and St. Joseph’s Children’s and Maternity Hospital, both in Scranton, PA. Under her supervision, the Foundling Home grew from a mere shelter and a day nursery into one of the finest homes of its kind in the nation.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Alice.

She is survived by five brothers, James, Joseph, Neil, and Dr. Patrick J., all of New Castle, PA, and Charles of Philadelphia, PA; and a sister, Rose Helen Maloy of Philadelphia, PA.

The funeral will be held on Thursday, Febraury 21, with interment to follow at St. Catherine’s Cemetery, Moscow, PA.
