Sister M. Magdalen Cummings, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Thursday, February 3, 1921, at St. John’s Convent in Pittston, PA.

She was born on July 22, 1867 in Scranton, PA, and given the name Mary E. She was the daughter of the late Peter and Mary Patterson Cummings. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1895, received the religious habit on April 9, 1896, and made profession of her vows on July 23, 1898.

Sister Magdalen served as a teacher at Marywood Seminary and St. Cecilia Academy, both in Scranton, PA; St. Cecilia School in Exeter, PA; St. Joseph School in Renovo, PA; and at schools located in Susquehanna, PA.

From 1913 until the time of her death, Sister Magdalen served as a teacher at St. John the Evangelist School in Pittston, PA.

She is preceded in death by a brother, James F.

She is survived by a brother, Peter J., Jr. of Scranton, PA, a sister, Anna M. Cusick of Scranton, PA, nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be on Saturday, February 5 at 10:00 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist Church in Pittston, PA. Interment will be at the Marywood College Cemetery, on the grounds of Marywood College in Scranton, PA.
