Sister M. Esther Gerrity, IHM

Sister M. Esther Gerrity, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Monday, April 1, 1974, at the Marian Convent in Scranton, PA.

She was born on May 3, 1889 in Pittston, PA, and given the name Agnes. She was the daughter of the late Martin and Mary Ann Burke Gerrity. She entered the IHM Congregation on March 25, 1911, received the religious habit on August 2, 1912, and made profession of her vows on August 3, 1914.

Sister Esther served as a teacher in the following schools: St. Laurence Academy in Portland, OR; Most Holy Rosary School in Syracuse, NY; St. Mary Elementary School in Avoca; Immaculate Conception Elementary School in Pittston, PA; St. Ann Elementary School in Scranton, PA; St. Rose Elementary School in Carbondale, PA; St. Thomas Aquinas Elementary School in Archbald, PA; and St. Patrick Elementary School in Scranton, PA.

From 1959 until the time of her death, Sister Esther served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.

She was preceded in death by seven brothers, Henry Ambrose, Thomas, John J., Martin Leo, Michael, John Joseph and Burke, and three sisters, Anna and Mary Gerrity, and Catherine E. Boyd.

She is survived by a sister, Helen of Pittston, PA, and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be Thursday, April 4 at 9:30 a.m. at the Marian Covent, followed by interment at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, PA. Friends may call on Wednesday after 2:00 p.m. at the Marian Convent.
