Sister M. Dolorosa Broderick, IHM

May 9, 1875 – April 18, 1944

Sister M. Dolorosa Broderick, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Tuesday, April 18, 1944 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Carbondale, PA.

She was born on May 9, 1875 in Archbald, PA, and given the name Agnes. She was the daughter of the late Anthony and Sarah Melvin Broderick. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 7, 1893, received the religious habit on May 24, 1894, and made profession of her vows on July 2, 1896.

Sister Dolorosa was an accomplished musician, and served as a music teacher at the following schools: St. John the Evangelist School in Pittston, PA; Laurel Hill Academy in Susquehanna, PA; Mount St. Mary’s Novitiate in Scranton, PA; Marywood College in Scranton, PA; and St. Ann School in Scranton, PA.

Sister Dolorosa served as principal at Laurel Hill Academy in Susquehanna, PA.

She was preceded in death by four brothers, Revered Patrick, Reverend Anthony, James and William, and three sisters, Mary A. Gilpatrick, Barbara Gilroy and Sadie Murphy.

She is survived by nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be on Thursday, April 20 at 9:30 a.m. at St. Ann’s Monastery Church in Scranton, PA. Interment will follow at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, PA. Friends may call on Wednesday at St. Ann’s Convent, Scranton.
