Sister M. Clementine Gunther, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Sunday, May 4, 1975, at Mercy Hosptial in Scranton, PA.

She was born on September 28, 1908 in Hastings, PA, and given the name Elizabeth Michaelina. She was the daughter of the late Frederick K. and Clementine Bohenski Gunther. She entered the IHM Congregation on August 14, 1926, received the religious habit on December 29, 1926, and made profession of her vows on January 2, 1929.

Sister Clementine served as a teacher in the following schools: St. Charles Borromeo Elementary School in Sugar Notch, PA, from 1929 to 1932; St. Mary Elementary School in Avoca, PA, from 1932 to 1934 and 1938 to 1941; St. Peter Cathedral Elementary School in Scranton, PA, from 1934 to 1937; St. Thomas Aquinas Elementary School in Archbald, PA, from 1937 to 1938; St. Rose Elementary School in Carbondale, PA, from 1941 to 1942; St. Ann in Scranton, from 1942 to 1944; St. Mary of the Mount Elementary School in Pittsburgh, PA, from 1944 to 1950; Immaculate Conception Elementary School in Lock Haven, PA, from 1950 to 1954; St. Mary Elementary School in Hollidaysburg, PA, from 1954 to 1957; Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Elementary School in Altoona, PA, from 1965 to 1971; and St. Bernard Parochial School in Hastings, PA from 1971 to 1974.

From 1974 until the time of her death, Sister Clementine served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent in Scranton, PA.

She was preceded in death by four brothers, Edward J., Theodore William (infant), Joseph and Alexander; and three sisters, Sister Mary Ferdinand, RSM, Helen Gunther, and Mary Gunther.

She is survived by two brothers, Frederick J. of Chicago, IL, and Walter J., of Atlanta, GA; two a sisters, Genevieve “Jean” Kolonay of Trafford, PA, and Cecilia Maria Van Scoyoc of Blandburg, PA; and many nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be Wednesday, May 7 at 9:30 a.m. at the Marian Convent in Scranton, followed by interment at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, PA. Friends may call on Monday and Tuesday, after 2:00 p.m., at the Marian Convent.
