Sister M. Angela Hughes, IHM

Sister M. Angela Hughes, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Saturday, November 2, 1996, at the Marian Convent in Scranton, PA.
She was born on September 28, 1916 in Altoona, PA, and given the name Dorothy. She was the daughter of the late Edward O. and Helen Risbon Hughes. She entered the Congregation on September 7, 1934, made first profession of her vows on May 3, 1937, and final profession of her vows on August 2, 1940.
Sister Angela was a teacher at the followings schools: St. Mary of the Mount High School in Pittsburgh, PA, in 1937; All Saints High School in Mastontown, PA, from 1937 to 1949; St. Joseph High School in Renovo, PA, from 1949 to 1950; St. Rosalia High School in Pittsburgh, PA, from 1950 to 1960; and Most Holy Rosary High School in Syracuse, NY, from 1960 to 1964.
Sister also served on the faculty at Marywood College in Scranton, PA, from 1964 to 1989.
From 1989 until the time of her death, Sister Angela served as a site supervisor for Telespond in Scranton, PA, and an instructor at the Educational Enrichment Institute at the IHM Center in Scranton, PA.
She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in science/mathematics from Marywood College, and a Master of Science degree in physics/chemistry from Notre Dame University. She was a member of the National Science Teachers Association and the American Association of Physics Teachers.
She was preceded in death by three sisters, Elizabeth (Bibby) Hughes, Patricia Hughes, and Marjorie Diehl.
She is survived by three brothers, Edward of Arlington, VA, Joseph of Altoona, PA, and Robert of Woodbridge, VA; four sisters, Eleanor McKnight of Hollidaysburg, PA, Mary White of Sheffield Lake, OH, Bertha Phillips of Lansdowne, PA, and Maxine Berrang of Waynesboro, VA; nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be Wednesday, November 6 at 10:30 a.m. at the Marian Convent, followed by interment at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, PA. Friends may call on Tuesday, after 2:00 p.m. at the Marian Convent.
