Sister M. Placidus Smith, IHM

Sister M. Placidus Smith, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on May 15, 1977 at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

She was born on January 30, 1895 in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania; and given the name Mary Lillian.  She was the daughter of the late Hugh and Mary Dublin Smith.  She entered the IHM Congregation on July 2, 1911, received the religious habit on August 2, 1912, and made profession of her vows on August 3, 1914.

Sister Placidus taught music at the following schools: St. Patrick in Spangler, from 1914 to 1918 and 1919 to 1921; St. Leo in Ashley, from 1918 to 1919;  St. John in Susquehanna, from 1921 to 1923, 1925 to 1927, and 1953 to 1954; St. Bernard in Hastings from 1923 to 1925; St. Basil in Lynbrook, NY, from 1931 to 1947; St. Rosalia in Pittsburgh, from 1947 to 1949; St. Matthew in East Stroudsburg, from 1949 to 1953; St. Ann in Devon, CT, from 1954 to 1955; St. Alphonsus in New York City, from 1955 to 1958; and St. Agnes in Baltimore, MD, from 1959 to 1972. 

Sister also served in child care for resident children at the Catholic Child Care Center in Hollidaysburg, from 1972 to 1973.

From 1973 until the time of her death, she served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.

She is survived by a sister, Lyle I. Foor of Hollidaysburg, PA; nieces and nephews.

Interment will follow the Mass of Christian Burial at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, Pennsylvania.
