Sister Mary of the Angels Whalen, IHM

Sister Mary of the Angels Whalen, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, died Monday, October 10, 1988 at the Marian Convent in Scranton, PA, after an illness.

Daughter of the late Thomas F. and Ida Panyard Whalen, she was born on July 21, 1904 in Massillon, Ohio. She entered the IHM Congregation from St. Mary of the Mount Parish, Pittsburgh, on September 8, 1922, was received into the novitiate on December 28, 1922, and made profession of her vows on December 29, 1924.

Sister Mary of the Angels served as a math and history teacher at the following high schools: St. Rosalia in Pittsburgh, from 1950 to 1967; Immaculata in New York City, NY; and at schools located in Scranton.  During the summer sessions she taught at Marywood College in Scranton. For six years, she was supervisor of mathematics for the Diocese of Rockville Centre in New York.

She earned an Bachelor of Arts degree from Marywood College, and an Master of Arts degree in math education from Catholic University. She did further study at the University of Pittsburgh, University of Illinois Stanford University, and Duquesne University. She was given the first "Teacher of the Year" award by the Diocese of Pittsburgh, and was involved in several professional organizations.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Thomas and John; and four sisters, Ida Jane Whalen, Anne McNierney, Ruth Whalen and Frances O'Brien.

She is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Grace McCosby of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania; and Mrs. Pauline Sterzenback, Ozark, Alabama; nieces and nephews. One niece, Sister Delia Marie McNierney, IHM, teaches computer courses at St. Rosalia School in Pittsburgh. 

The funeral will be Thursday with Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in the Marian Convent chapel in Scranton, PA. Interment will be at Saint Catherine's Cemetery, Moscow, Pennsylvania.  Friends may call at the Marian Convent on Wednesday afternoon.
