Sister M. Lillian Atkinson, IHM

Sister M. Lillian Atkinson, IHM,  of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, died Saturday, July 24, 1982 at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania, after an extended illness.

She was born on February 23, 1896 in Carbondale, Pennsylvania, and was the daughter of the late Patrick and Catherine O'Dowd Atkinson.  She entered the IHM Congregation on December 8, 1913, received the religious habit on August 3, 1914, and made profession of her vows on August 2, 1916.

Sister Lillian taught primary and intermediate grades at the following schools: St. Michael's Industrial School for Boys in Hoban Heights, PA; St. John the Evangelist Elementary School in Pittston, PA; St. Ann Elementary School in Scranton, PA; IHM Academy in Coeur d'Alene, ID; All Saints Elementary School in Masontown, PA; and St. Paul Elementary School in Cranston, RI.

Sister served as principal at St. Mary School Elementary School in Upper Marlboro, MD; and at Immaculate Conception Elementary School in West Pittston, PA. She was superior of the local community in Sugar Notch. For thirteen years, Sister Lillian held the position of director of Residence O'Reilly (now known as of Regina Hall) Hall at Marywood College in Scranton, PA.

From 1971 until the time of her death, she served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.

She is survived by two cousins, Mrs. Robert Brennan and Mrs. Loretta Kilpatrick, both of Carbondale.

The funeral will be on Tuesday, August 27 with Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. at the Marian Convent Chapel. Interment will follow Mass on Tuesday at St. Catherine's Cemetery, Moscow, Pennsylvania. Friends may call at the Marian Convent on Monday afternoon or evening.
