Sister M. Clotilde Cullen, IHM

Sister M. Clotilde Cullen, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Tuesday, October 19, 1993, at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

She was born on December 29, 1911 in Scranton, Pennsylvania, and given the name Anne Marie. She was the daughter of the late Thomas and Agnes Golden Cullen.  She entered the Congregation on September 8, 1929, received the religious habit on April 21, 1930, and made profession of her vows on April 21, 1932.

Sister Clotilde served as a music teacher at the following schools: St. Patrick Elementary School in Spangler, PA; Holy Name of Jesus Elementary School in Forty-Fort, PA; St. Paul Elementary School in Cranston, RI; St. Thomas Elementary School in Providence, RI; St. Ephrem Elementary School in Brooklyn, NY; Holy Trinity Elementary School in Poughkeepsie, NY; St. Ann Elementary School in Nyack, NY; Our Lady of Grace Elementary Schoolin Greensboro, NC; St. Ambrose  Elementary School in Bridgeport, CT; Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Elementary School in Forest Hills, NY; as well as at elementary schools located in Scranton, PA, Baltimore, MD, and Washington, NC.

Sister Clotilde also served as the Director of Junior Sisters for the IHM Congregation in Scranton, PA, during the 1960s.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Sister Ann Dolora, IHM, and Dolores MacPherson, and a brother Thomas J.

She is survived in part by two nieces, Joan Williams of Scranton, PA, and Cheryl Powers of New Jersey, and four nephews, Tom and John Cullen, both of New Jersey, James Cullen of Michigan, and James MacPherson of New York.

Interment is at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, Pennsylvania.

Archival Remembrance:

A regal and radiant enjoyer of life, Sr. M. Clotilde Cullen served as a principal and music teacher for most of her life. She also touched the lives of many IHM present and former members during the 1960s when she served as director of junior sisters for the IHM Congregation. Recognized for her wisdom, she became a sounding board for many as they explored the deeper questions of life. Her ability to accept others where they were helped many in their own growth and development. "God always takes us when we are best ready to go," Sr. Clotilde Cullen would often say.  And on October 19, 1993, God decided that Sr. Clotilde was best ready.  Sr. Clotilde died at the Marian Convent the way she lived – peacefully, fearlessly, and with a positive attitude about the new life she was about to enter.
