Sister M. Pierre Kennedy, IHM

Sister M. Pierre Kennedy, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Thursday, May 11, 1995 at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

She as born March 20, 1906 in Plymouth, Pennsylvania, and given the name Mary Helen.  She was the daughter of the late Peter and Anna Ward Kennedy. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1928, made profession of her first vows on April 14, 1931, and final profession of her vows on August 2, 1934.

Sister Pierre served as a teacher at the following schools: Marywood Seminary in Scranton, PA, from 1928 to 1929; St. John High School in Pittston, PA, from 1931 to 1932; Holy Rosary High School in Scranton, PA, from 1932 to 1935; St. Dominic High School in Oyster Bay, NY; Sacred Heart School in La Plata, MD; South Catholic High School in Scranton, PA, from 1964 to 1969; and at high schools located in Pittsburgh, PA.

From 1977 until the time of her death, Sister Pierre served as a prayer minister at St. John's Convent in Pittston, St. Leo's Convent in Ashley, and at the Marian Convent in Scranton.

She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in history from Marywood College, and a Master of Arts degree in history from Fordham University.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Elizabeth, and three brothers, Vincent, John and Leo.

She is surivived by cousins, including, John Barry of Plymouth, PA, Mary Cushner of Kingston, PA, Mary O'Boyle O'Mara of Sayre, NY, and Mary Ruddy of Washington, DC.

Interment is at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, Pennsylvania.

Archival Remembrance for Sister M. Pierre Kennedy:

Sr. M. Pierre entered eternal life on May 11, 1995. During her more that 64 years in re­ligious life, Sister Pierre gave faithful witness with her unwavering "Yes" to all that was asked of her.  Sister Pierre was an outstanding social studies teacher who loved her ministry. As teacher and guidance counselor, she touched and influenced lives forever among her students at Marywood Seminary; St. John High School, Pittston, PA; Holy Rosary High School, Scranton; South Catholic High School, Scranton; St. Rosalia, Pittsburgh, PA ; St. Dominic High Oyster Bay, NY; and Archbishop Neale School, LaPlata, MD. Her years in prayer ministry at St. John Convent, Pittston; St. Leo Convent, Ashley; and the Marian Convent, where she resided from 1992 to the time of her death, continued to give witness to her total dedication to God.
