Sister Mary Pierina Kennedy, IHM

Sister Mary Pierina Kennedy, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Monday, September 16, 1968 at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

She was born on February 13, 1885 in Scranton, Pennsylvania, and given the name Cecilia. She was the daughter of the late Thomas and Cecilia O'Malley Kennedy.  She entered the IHM Congregation on November 1, 1911, received the religious habit on August 2, 1912, and made profession of her vows on August 3, 1914.

Sister Mary Pierina served as a teacher at the following schools: St. Mary of the Mount Elementary School in Pittsburgh, PA, from 1914 to 1916; Holy Rosary Elementary School in Scranton, PA, from 1916 to 1917; Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Elementary School in Altoona, PA, from 1917 to 1920; Marywood Seminary in Scranton, PA, from 1920 to 1934; and St. Charles Borromeo Elementary School in Sugar Notch, PA, from 1956 to 1957.  She also served as a catechetical instructor at St. Agnes Catechetical Center in Forest City, PA, from 1954 to 1955, and at St. Hugh's Catechetical Center in Hughesville, from 1955 to 1956.

Sister Mary Pierina served as principal at the following schools: Immaculate Conception Elementary School in Lock Haven, PA, from 1934 to 1936, and St. Basil Elementary School in Dushore, PA, from 1936 to 1938. 

From 1957 until the time of her death, Sister Mary Pierina served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent in Scranton. 

She was preceded in death by a sister, Sister M. Mildred, IHM, and five brothers, Michael M., Thomas, Reverend Richard Alphonsus, John J. and Francis.

She is survived by a nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

Interment is at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, Pennsylvania.
