Sister M. St. John Ortner, IHM

Sister M. St. John Ortner, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, died Wednesday, September 29, 1982, at North Shore Hospital in Manhasset, NY, after a brief illness.

She was born on August 10, 1909 in Brooklyn, NY, and was the daughter of the late Louis P. and Lillian Lillian Louisa Meiss Ortner. She entered the IHM Congregation on February 2, 1929, received the religious habit on August 2, 1929, and made profession of her vows on July 31, 1931. 

Sister St. John served as a math/science teacher at the following schools: St. John the Evangelist High School in Scranton, PA; Marywood Seminary in Scranton, PA; Dunmore Central Catholic High School in Dunmore, PA; St. Joseph High School in Renovo, PA; St. Matthew High School in East Stroudsburg, PA; St. Dominic High School in Oyster Bay, NY; as well as at high schools located in Baltimore, MD.  At the time of her death, she was serving as a teacher at St. Mary High School in Manhasset, NY.

Sister served as principal and superior at Archbishop Neale School in LaPlata, MD. 

She is preceded in death by a brother, Louis.

She is survived by three sisters, Sister Mary Alois, IHM, of St. Patrick's Convent in Scranton, PA, Helen C. of Brooklyn, NY, and Aloise Kowalski of Toms River, NJ, a brother, Reverend John, S.J. of Brooklyn, NY, and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be Saturday with Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. in St. Mary's Church, Manhasset, NY. Interment will be Monday at St. Catherine's Cemetery, Moscow, Pennsylvania. Friends may call at St. Mary's Convent, Manhasset, NY, on Friday, 3 to 5 p.m. or 7 to 9 p.m.
