Sister M. Edwin Ott, IHM

Sister M. Edwin Ott, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, died on Saturday, March 28, 1981 at St. Joseph's Hospital in Carbondale, Pennsylvania, after an illness.

She was born on April 8, 1895 in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, and was give the name Cecilia Clair. She was the Daughter of the late Joseph Michael and Clara Costlow Ott. She entered the IHM Congregation on July 2, 1911, received the religious habit on August 2, 1912, and made profession of her vows on August 3, 1914.

As a teacher of intermediate and junior high grades, Sister Edwin served on the faculty of the following IHM Schools: St. Joseph Elementary School in Renovo, PA, from 1914 to 1916; St. Alphonsus Elementary Schoolin New York, NY, from 1916 to 1917; St. John the Evangelist Elementary Schoolin Pittston, PA, from 1917 to 1919; St. Mary of the Mount Elementary School in Pittsburgh, PA, from 1919 to 1924 and 1951 to 1952; St. Ephrem Elementary School in Brooklyn, NY, from 1924 to 1931; St. Paul Elementary School in Edgewood, RI, from 1931 to 1936; St. Rosalia Elementary School in Pittsburgh, PA, from 1936 to 1939; St. Aloysius Parochial School in Cresson, PA,  from 1964 to 1972.  

In addition to her teaching duties, she was also the principal in the following schools: St. Francis Elementary School in Munhall, PA, from 1939 to 1945; St. Matthew Elementary School in Woodcrest, DE, from 1945 to 1947; St. Mary Elementary School in Goldsboro, NC, from 1947 to 1951;Sacred Heart Consolidated School in La Plata, MD, in 1952; Archbishop Neale School in La Plata, MD, from 1952 to 1959. At St. Rosalia High School in Pittsburgh, PA, Sister served as both principal in the school and superior of the convent, from 1959 to 1961.

She also served as community supervisor of schools in both Pennsylvania and New York.

From 1980 until the time of her death, Sister Edwin served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent in Scranton.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Cletus, and three sisters, Clara Genevieve Bardell, Christine Bancroft, and Mary A. Schneider.

She is survived by four sisters, Bernadine V. Martin and Irene R. Edmiston, both of Duncansville, PA, Josephine M. Hicks and  Magdalene R. Boland, both of Altoona, PA, as well a several nieces.

The funeral will be Tuesday, March 31 at the Marian Convent Chapel with Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m., with  interment to follow at St. Catherine's Cemetery, Moscow, PA.   Friends may call at the Marian Convent on Monday afternoon or evening.
