Sister M. Madeleine Loughlin, IHM
Sister M. Madeleine Loughlin, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Thursday, September 25, 1947 at St. Basil's Convent in Dushore, Pennsylvania.
She was born on November 15, 1871 of Susquehanna, Pennsylvania, and given the name Margaret. She was the daughter of the late Andrew and Mary Gleason Loughlin. She entered the IHM Congregation on July 31, 1890, received the religious habit on August 2, 1891, and made profession of her vows on April 3, 1893.
Sister Madeleine served as a teacher at St. Cecilia Academy in Scranton, PA. She served as teacher and superior at St. Joseph School in Renovo, PA. She also served as the directress of Marywood Seminary in Scranton, PA.
At Marywood College in Scranton, PA, Sister served as registrar, from 1922 to 1926.
From 1925 until the time of her death, Sister Madeleine served first as bursar, and then as the general secretary for the IHM Congregation.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, William, Andrew, and James.
She is survived by a sister, Sister M. Maria, IHM.
The funeral will be on Monday, September 29 at St. Peter's Cathedral in Scranton, PA. Interment will follow at St. Catherine's Cemetery in Moscow, Pennsylvania. Friends may call on Sunday at the IHM Motherhouse in Scranton.

REQUIESCANT IN PACE!
Sister M. Madeleine who died on September 25, 1947, was like Sister Immaculata, a pioneer in the development of Marywood College as well as an active participant in the creation of its building plans and their completion to the time of her death. At her death, she was general secretary of the community. Sister Madeleine was registrar at the college from 1922 to 1926. During her career at Marywood, she was bursar of the community before becoming its general secretary. She also held the office of local superior at St. Joseph's Convnet, Renovo, Pa., and directress of the seminary at Marywood.
Her memory is held in veneration not only at Marywood but in the heart of the city of Scranton where she labored for many years at St. Cecilia's in St. Peter's Cathedral parish. But widespread devotion to her memory goes far beyond city limits.
Besides the members of the hierarchy and college officials and students who were present at her requiem Mass, civic leaders honored her with their presence. Most Reverend Bishop Hafey offered her an impressive tribute after pronouncing the blessing of her body in the Cathedral where she had instructed the children of the parish for many years.
Alumnae and collegians, relatives and friends from many parts of the country gathered to render her homage and respect.

MARYWOOD MOURNS DEATH OF SISTER MADELEINE, I.H.M.
Those of us who were undergraduates in the decade of the 1920's will remember Sister M. Madeleine who as College Registrar was universally loved for her gentle calm, her constant kindness, and her sympathetic understanding of every student's every problem. Previous to her service at the College, Sister M. Madeleine had been Directress of Marywood Seminary. For the past 22 years she served in administrative capacity as a member of the Community Council of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. While visiting at St. Basil Convent, Dushore, in the company of Reverend Mother M. Marcella, Sister was stricken with a heart attack and died on Thursday, September 25. She was buried on Monday, September 29, when the Solemn Mass of Requiem was offered at St. Peter's Cathedral. Students of the college attended in academic costume, members of the Student Council forming a guard of honor. All Marywood mourns the quiet absence of this beloved Sister, and each one of us may truly claim an additional intercessor in the High Court of Heaven where we know, Sister M. Madeleine will plead Marywood's cause and that of every loyal alumna.
