Sister M. James Francis Foley, IHM

Sister M. James Francis Foley, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Thursday, March 28, 2002 at the Marian Community Hospital in Carbondale, Pennsylvania.

She was born on March 22, 1908 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and given the name Mary.  She was the daughter of the late Francis and Margaret Austin Foley.  She entered the IHM Congregation on March 25, 1926, made temporary profession of her vows on August 15, 1928, and final profession of her vows on August 2, 1932.

Sister James Francis served as a teacher at the following schools: St. John Elementary School in Susquehanna, PA, from 1928 to 1930; St. Thomas Aquinas Elementary School in Archbald, PA, from 1930 to 1932 and 1953 to 1957; St. Michael's Industrial School for Boys in Hoban Heights, PA, from 1940 to 1945; St. Paul Elementary School in Scranton, PA, from 1957 to 1963; St. Leo Elementary School in Ashley, PA, from 1963 to 1965; Most Holy Rosary Elementary School in Syracuse, NY; St. Peter of Alcantara Elementary School in Port Washington, NY; as well as schools located in Cresson and Pittsburgh, PA.  

Sister also served as a catechetical instructor at St. Ann's Catechetical Center in Devon, CT; and secretary at St. Joseph's Center in Scranton, PA, from 1981 to 1983.

From 1988 until the time of her death, Sister James Francis served as a prayer minister in Pittsburgh, PA, and at the Marian Convent in Scranton, PA.

She received a Bachelor of Science degree in business/education and a Master of Science degree in religious education, both from Marywood College.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Herbert and Francis J., and three sisters, Josephine, Rose A. and Margaret E. Wegert.

She is survived by a cousin, Jean Small of Pittsburgh, PA.

The funeral will be Tuesday, April 2 at 10:30 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at the Marian Convent, followed by interment at St. Catherine's Cemetery, Moscow, PA. Friends may call at the Marian Convent on Monday after 2:00 p.m.
