Sister Mary Frederick Walize, IHM

Sister Mary Frederick Walize, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, died Sunday, January 10, 1988, at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania, after an illness.

Daughter of the late Thomas W. and Cora Hess Walize, she was born on April 3, 1902 in Muncy, Pennsylvania. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 7, 1920, received the religious habit on December 28, 1920, and made profession of her vows on December 28, 1922.

Sister Mary Frederick served as a teacher at the following schools: Epiphany in Sayre, PA; St. Joseph in Renovo, PA; St. Basil in Dushore, PA; Immaculate Conception in West Pittston, PA; St. Mary in Manhasset, NY; St. Dominic in Oyster Bay, NY; St. Patrick in Oneida, NY; as well as at schools located in Pittsburgh, PA; and New York City, NY. She served as principal at four of these schools.

Sister also served as the librarian at St. Rose High School in Carbondale, PA and at Pocono Central Catholic in Cresco, PA.

From 1978 until the time of her death, Sister Mary Frederick served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.

She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and a Master of Arts degree in English, both from Marywood College. She also studied library science at Carnegie-Mellon University.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Frederick, Nathan, and Kenneth; and two sisters, Martha and Mrs. Margaret Lovett

She is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Helen Bauer of Renovo, PA; and Mrs. Theresa Staib of Williamsport, PA; and two nephews.

The funeral will be Tuesday with Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30 a.m. in the Marian Convent chapel. Interment will be at St. Catherine's Cemetery, Moscow, Pennsylvania. Friends may call at the Marian Convent Monday afternoon or evening.
