Sister Maria Alphonsus Hewetson, IHM

Sister Maria Alphonsus Hewetson, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate heart of Mary, died Thursday, October 28, 1982 at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania, after an extended illness.

She was born March 20, 1901 in New York City, New York, and was the daughter of the late Wallace and Ellen Butler Hewetson.  She entered the IHM Congregation on February 2, 1922, received the religious habit on August 15, 1922, and made profession of her vows on August 15, 1924.

Sister Maria Alphonsus taught at the intermediate and junior high levels at the following schools: St. John Elementary School in Susquehanna, PA; St. Leo Elementary School in Ashley, PA; Cathedral Elementary School in Scranton, PA; St. Basil Elementary School in Dushore, PA; St. Peter of Alcantara Elementary School in Port Washington, NY; St. Dominic Elementary Schoolin Oyster Bay, NY; as well as at schools located in New York City, NY. She served as school librarian at Our Lady Queen of Martyrs School in Forest Hills, NY.

Sister also served in child care for resident children at the Catholic Child Care Center in Hollidaysburg, PA. 

From 1979 until the time of her death, Sister Maria Alphonsus served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.

She is survived by a sister, Helen T. of Bronx, NY.

The funeral will be Tuesday, November 2 with Mass of Christian Burial in the Marian Convent Chapel at 9:30 a.m. Interment will follow at St. Catherine's Cemetery, Moscow, Pennsylvania. Friends may call at the Marian Convent Monday afternoon or evening.
