Sister M. Cecily Wittig, IHM

Sister M. Cecily Wittig, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Friday, December 19, 2003 at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

Daughter of the late William A. and Rose Golden Wittig, she was born on September 10, 1915 in Roslyn, New York. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1934, made her temporary profession of vows on May 3, 1937, and final profession of her vows on August 1, 1940.

Sister Cecily served as a teacher at the following schools: St. Dominic High School in Oyster Bay, NY; St. Joseph High School in Danville, PA; Sacred Heart Elementary School in Mount Holly, NJ; as well as schools located in Pittsburgh, PA; New York City; and New Bern, NC.

Sister also served as the office manager at Cathedral High School in New York City, NY;  a prayer minister at St. Joseph Convent in New York City, NY; and a receptionist at the IHM Center in Scranton, PA.

From 1996 until the time of her death, Sister Cecily served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.

She received a Bachelor of Science degree in education, and a Master of Science degree in theology, both from Marywood College.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Edna Hastie and Gertrude; and three brothers, William and two infants.

She is survived by a niece, Rosemary Dressel of Kingston, NY; a nephew, James Hastie of Kingston, NY; and cousins, Margaret Busse of Bethpage, NY, James Dykes of Southbury, CT, Richard Dykes of Port Washington, NY, and Bernard Dykes of  West Islip, NY.

The funeral will be Tuesday, December 23 at 9:30 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at the Marian Convent followed by interment at St. Catherine's Cemetery, Moscow.  Friends may call at the Marian Convent on Monday, December 22, between 4:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.
