Sister Maria Bernadette Cox, IHM

Sister Maria Bernadette Cox, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Thursday, March 18, 1999, at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

She was born on December 3, 1910 in Ashville, PA, and given the name Mildred. She was the daughter of the late Harry Ellsworth and Bernadette D. Hertzog Cox.  She entered the IHM Congregation on August 14, 1926, made her temporary profession of vows on January 1, 1929, and her final profession of vows on August 2, 1932.

Sister Maria Bernadette served as a teacher at the following schools: Holy Rosary Elementary School in Scranton, PA, from 1936 to 1937; St. Leo Elementary School in Ashley, PA, from 1941 to 1945; St. Thomas Aquinas Elementary School in Archbald, PA, from 1981 to 1986; St. Joseph Elementary School in Williamsport, PA; St. Joseph Elementary School in Renovo, PA; St. Basil Elementary School in Dushore, PA; St. Matthew Elementary School in East Stroudsburg, PA; Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Elementary School in Forest Hills, NY; St. Matthew Elementary School in Wilmington, DE; St. Paul Elementary School in Cranston, RI; Mt. Holly Regional Catholic Elementary School in Mount Holly, NJ; St. Mary John Elementary School in Cresson, PA; as well as schools located in Lock Haven, PA; Brooklyn, NY; and Baltimore, MD. 

From 1986 until the time of her death, Sister Maria Bernadette served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.

She earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Marywood College. 

She is preceded in death by four sisters, Sister M. Englebert, IHM, Sr. M. St. Gabriel, IHM, Helen Prague, and Geraldine Trexler, and two brothers, Russell and Leroy.

She is survived by a brother, Joseph "Ralph" of Maywood, NJ, and many nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be Monday, March 22 at 10:30 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at the Marian Convent, followed by interment at St. Catherine's Cemetery, Moscow. Friends may call at the Marian Convent on Sunday between 2:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.
