Sister M. Norman Shaffer, IHM

Sister M. Norman Shaffer, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Wednesday, September 8, 1999 at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

She was born on December 28, 1921 in New York, NY; and was the daughter of the late Charles Norman and Lucy White Shaffer.  She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1943, made her temporary profession of vows on May 8, 1946 and her final profession of vows on August 2, 1949.

Sister Norman served as a teacher at the following schools: St. Matthew Elementary School in East Stroudsburg, PA, from 1953 to 1956; St. John Elementary School in Pittston, PA from 1956 to 1963; Most Holy Rosary School in Syracuse, NY; Our Lady of Grace Elementary Schoo in Greensboro, NC; as well as at schools located in Pittsburgh, PA.

Sister also served as a catechetical instructor at St. Agnes Parish Forest City, PA, from 1968 to 1971; and an assistant in the dietary department at the Marian Convent from 1971 to 1990.

From 1990 until the time of her death, she served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent in Scranton.

She received a Bachelor of Science degree in home economics, and a Master of Arts degree in elementary education, both from Marywood College.

She is survived by a sister, Dorothy Thompson of Hudson Falls, NY; a brother, Atty. Charles M. Shaffer of Rockville, MD; several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be Monday, September 13 at 10:00 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at the Marian Convent, followed by interment at St. Catherine Cemetery, Moscow. Friends may call at the Marian Convent on Sunday between 2:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.
