Sister Mary Walter Campbell, IHM

Sister Mary Walter Campbell, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Wednesday, September 14, 1977 at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

She was born on July 2, 1886 in Dunmore, Pennsylvania, and given the name Gertrude.  She was the daughter of the late James and Mary Healey Campbell.  She entered the IHM Congregation on March 25, 1907, received the religious habit on July 16, 1907, and made profession of her vows on April 13, 1909.

Sister Mary Walter served as a teacher in the following schools: St. Patrick Elementary School in Scranton, PA, from 1936 to 1942 and 1955 to 1957; St. Patrick Elementary School in White HavenPA, from 1909 to 1910; St. John the Evangelist Elementary School in PittstonPA, from 1910 to 1913; St. Mary Elementary School in PattonPA, from 1913 to 1917; St. Mary John School in CressonPA, from 1918 to 1921 and 1949 to 1955; Holy Rosary Elementary School in ScrantonPA, from 1921 to 1922; St. Rosalia Elementary School in PittsburghPA, from 1922 to 1927; St. Joseph Elementary School in New Bern, NC, from 1927 to 1934 and 1942 to 1943; St. Mary of the Assumption Elementary Schoolin Upper Marlboro, MD, from 1934 to 1935; and Immaculate Conception Elementary School in West Pittston, PA, from 1935 to 1936.

Sister served as principal at the following schools: Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Elementary School in BarnesboroPA, from 1943 to 1949; and St. Mary John School in CressonPA, from 1949 to 1955.  

From 1955 until the time of her death, Sister Mary Walter served as prayer minister at the Marian Convent.

She was preceded in death by three sisters, Maragaret, Mary Hanley, and Anna B. Campbell-Perry.

She is survived by nieces and nephews and grandnieces and grandnephews.

Interment is at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, PA.
