Sister Marietta Smith, IHM

Sister Marietta Smith, IHM, (formerly known as Sister Mary Marietta) of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on April 5, 1972 at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

Daughter of the late John and Mary Walsh Smith, she was born on February 8, 1891 in Scranton, Pennsylvania; and given the name Agnes Cecilia.  She entered the IHM Congregation on August 15, 1912, and made profession of her vows on July 6, 1915.

Sister Marietta served as a music teacher in the following schools: St. John in Susquehanna; St. Leo in Ashley; St. Basil in Dushore; Immaculate Conception in Lock Haven; Our Lady of Mt. Carmel in Altoona; Most Holy Rosary in Syracuse, NY; St. Alphonsus in New York City; St. Ephrem in Brooklyn, NY; St. Joseph in Renovo; St. Cecilia in Wyoming; St. Mary in Avoca; St. John in Cresson; St. Charles in Sugar Notch; St. Ambrose in Bridgeport, CT; Sacred Heart in La Plata, MD; and St. Peter of Alcantara in Port Washington.

She was preceded in death by five brothers, Thomas, James, John Jr., Michael and William; and a sister, Mary Ignatus Smith.

She is survived by a sister, Bridget (Bessie) Delmar, nieces and nephews.

Interment will follow the Mass of Christian Burial at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, Pennsylvania.
