Sister Josephine Marie Martin, IHM

Sister Josephine Marie Martin, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Monday, March 18, 1974 at St. Joseph's Convent in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.

She was born on June 26, 1903 in Danville, Pennsylvania, and given the name Mary Therese.  She was the daughter of the late Thomas and Agnes Veronica Trainor Martin.  She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1922, received the religious habit on December 28, 1922, and made profession of her vows on December 29, 1924.

Sister Josephine Marie served as teacher in the following schools: Our Lady of Mt.Carmel Elementary School in Altoona, PA, from 1924 to 1926; St. Ephrem Elementary School in Brooklyn, NY, from 1926 to 1927; St. Thomas Quinas Elementary School in Archbald, PA, from 1927 to 1928; St. Thomas Elementary School in Ashville, PA, from 1928 to 1930; St. Paul Elementary School in Scranton, PA, from 1930 to 1933; St. Alphonsus Elementary School in New York, NY, from 1933 to 1934; St. Ann Elementary School in Scranton, PA, from 1934 to 1941; St. Paul Elementary School in Scranton, PA, from 1941 to 1944; Most Holy Rosary Elementary School in Syracuse, NY, from 1944 to 1947; St. Raymond Elementary School in Lynbrook, NY, from 1946 to 1953; St. Dominic Elementary School in Oyster Bay, NY, from 1953 to 1954; St. Joseph Elementary School in Williamsport, PA, from 1954 to 1958; St. Rita Elementary School in Dundalk, MD, from 1959 to 1960; St. Ann Elementary School in Nyack, NY, from 1960 to 1964; St. Rosalia Elementary School in Pittsburgh, PA, from 1964 to 1966; St. Mary Elementary School in Manhasset, NY, from 1966 to 1970; St. Thomas Elementary School in Providence, RI, from 1970 to 1971; St. Aloysius Elementary School in Cresson, PA, from 1971 to 1972; and St. Joseph Elementary School in Williamsport, PA, from 1972 until the time of her death.

She is preceded in death by two brothers, Francis and Edward, and a sister, Elizabeth Coleman.

She is survived by four sisters, Agnes Martin, Margaret, Josephine Martin Brady, and Sister M. Rosalie, IHM, nieces and nephews.

Interment is at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, Pennsylvania.

Sister Josephine Marie was a dedicated religious and teacher who was greatly loved and respected by her pupils and everyone who knew her. Many lives were touched by her untiring efforts and interests. May she enjoy her eternal reward!
