Sister M. Aloysius Hughes, IHM

Sister M. Aloysius Hughes, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Friday, January 2, 1976 at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

She was born on November 17, 1901 in Altoona, Pennsylvania, and given the name Bertha Elizabeth.  She was the daughter of the late Thomas and Mary Ellen White Hughes.  She entered the IHM Congregation on February 28, 1920, received the religious habit on August 2, 1920, and made profession of her vows on August 2, 1922.

Sister Aloysius served as a teacher in the following schools: St. Ann Elementary School in Scranton, PA; St. Joseph Elementary School in Danville, PA; St. Paul Elementary School in Edgewood, RI; St. Alphonsus Elementary School in New York City, NY; St. Paul Elementary School in Scranton, PA; St. John the Evangelist Elementary School in Bellefonte, PA; St. Mary-John School in Cresson, PA; St. Mary Elementary School in Patton, PA; St. Patrick Elementary School in Olyphant, PA; and Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Elementary School in Asbury Park, NJ. 

From 1960 to 1970, Sister taught at St. Mary Elementary School in Hollidaysburg, PA; and then served as the school's secretary, from 1970 to 1974.  

From 1974 until the time of her death, Sister Aloysius served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Marion.

She received a Bachelor of Science degree in education from Marywood College.

Interment is at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, Pennsylvania.
