Sister M. Cecil Nooney, IHM

Sister M. Cecil Nooney, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, died Monday, August 24, 1981, at St. Joseph's Hospital in Carbondale, Pennsylvania, after an illness.

She was born on April 30, 1897 in Scranton, Pennsylvania, and given the name Alice. She was the daughter of the late William P. and Ellen Lennon Nooney. She entered the IHM Congregation on August 15, 1918, received the religious habit on August 2, 1919, and made profession of her vows on August 2, 1921.

Sister Cecil served as a teacher of intermediate grades at the following schools: St. Patrick Elementary School in Oneida, NY; St. Ephrem Elementary School in Brooklyn, NY; St. Dominic Elementary Schoolin Oyster Bay, NY; and Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Elementary School in Forest Hills, NY.

Sister also served as a volunteer in the school library at Nativity Elementary School in Scranton, PA, from 1970 to 1980.

From 1980 until the time of her death, Sister Cecil served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, William, James, and Matthew, and six sisters, Mary (Mamie), Dellia, Helen Taylor, Anna Harrity, Genevieve Osborne and Delia A.

She is survived by several nieces and nephews, including Robert Osborne of Scranton, PA, Joseph Osborne of Gouldsboro, PA, William F. Harrity of New York, Jeanne Zwick, Mrs. John Seechack, Mrs. George Quinn, Mrs. Russell Colborn, all of Scranton, PA, Mrs. Joseph Miller of New Jersey, and Mrs. Edward Plourde of Connecticut.

The funeral will be Thursday, August 27 with Mass of Christian Burial in the Marian Convent Chapel at 9:30 a.m. with interment to follow at St. Catherine's Cemetery, Moscow, Pennsylvania. Friends may call at the Marian Convent Wednesday afternoon from 2:00 to 4:30 p.m. or evening from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.
