Sister M. deLellis Long, IHM
Sister M. deLellis Long, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Saturday, September 13, 1997 at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania.
She was born on March 12, 1905 in New Germany, PA, and given the name Matilda. She was the daughter of the late Ambrose and Barbara Wirfel Long. She entered into the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1929, made her temporary profession of vows on April 21, 1932, and her final profession of vows on August 2, 1935.
Sister deLellis was a teacher in the following schools: St. John the Evangelist Elementary School in Susquehanna, PA, from 1935 to 1935 and 1965 to 1966; St. Ephrem Elementary School in Brooklyn, NY, from 1935 to 1936; St. John Elementary School in Scranton, PA, from 1936 to 1937; St. Mary of the Assumption Elementary School in Upper Marlboro, MD, from 1937 to 1938; Sacred Heart Elementary School in Jermyn, PA, from 1938 to 1939; St. John Elementary School in Pittston, PA, from 1939 to 1942; St. Peter of Alcantara Elementary School in Port Washington, NY, from 1942 to 1946; St. Rosalia Elementary School in Pittsburgh, PA, from 1946 to 1950; Immaculate Conception Elementary School in Lock Haven, PA, from 1950 to 1953; St. Leo Elementary School in Ashley, PA, from 1953 to 1957; Most Holy Rosary Elementary School in Syracuse, NY, from 1957 to 1963; St. Joseph Elementary School in Williamsport, PA, from 1963 to 1964; St. Bernardine Elementary School in Baltimore, MD, from 1964 to 1965; All Saints Elementary School in Masontown, PA, from 1966 to 1970; St. Agnes Elementary School in Baltimore, MD, from 1970 to 1972; and St. John Elementary School in Bellefonte, PA, from 1972 to 1986.
From 1986 until the time of her death, Sister deLellis served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent in Scranton.
She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in education from Marywood College in 1945.
She is preceded in death by a sister, Armella Bopp, and three brothers, Reverend Camillus, O.S.B., Albert Joseph, and Louis.
She is survived by four brothers, Benedict Blaise, Aloysius Peter, Matthew Ambrose, and Bernard Michael, a sister, Cleopha M. Frank, nieces and nephews.
Interment is at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, Pennsylvania.
