Sister Marie Eugene Caufield, IHM
Sister Marie Eugene Caufièld, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, died on Sunday, March 12, 1978 at St. Joseph's Hospital in Carbondale, PA, after an illness.
She was born on April 20, 1898 in Honesdale, PA, and give the name Frances Agnes. She was the daughter of the late Martin and Mary Ann Fannon Caufièld. She entered the IHM Community on September 8, 1922, made first vows on December 29, 1924, and final profession on December 8, 1930.
Sister Marie Eugene served as a a teacher at St. Paul School in Scranton, PA.
For almost 50 years, Sister has served at Marywood College in Scranton, PA, in the following capacities: instructor in Spanish and Latin, Chairman of Foreign Language Department, Foreign Student Advisor, director of testing and scheduling of classes, Alumnae Moderator, and Assistant Dean.
Sister Marie Eugene received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Marywood College, and a Master of Arts degree from Catholic University.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, Reverend Eugene P., James J., and John B., and four sisters, Mary Kathryn Lynch, Elizabeth, Anna M. and Helen.
She is survived by nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, March 14, at the IHM Generalate Chapel at Marywood, with interment to follow at St. Catherine's Cemetery, Moscow, PA. Friends may call on Monday at the Marian Convent.

"Sister Marie Eugene Called to Eternal Life
Sister Marie Eugene Caufield, a member of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Congregation for more than 55 years, died on March 12, 1978, at St. Joseph's Hospital, Carbondale, after a brief illness. The funeral was conducted on March 14, 1978, with concelebrated Mass at the I.H.M. Generalate Chapel at Marywood. Interment was at St. Catherine's Cemetery, Moscow, PA.
Sister was a member of the first graduation class from Marywood College in 1919. She entered religious life in 1922 and made public profession of her vows in 1924. Sister taught for 5 years in public and private schools and the last 55 years (sic) in Marywood College where she was greatly beloved by faculty and students. Sister served in various capacities--as instructor in Spanish and Latin; Chairman of Foreign Language Department, Foreign Student Advisor, Director of Testing and scheduling of classes, Alumnae Moderator and Assistant Dean. She also served on various committees--Honors, Admissions, Policy, Testing.
God gave Sister Marie Eugene many gifts of nature and grace. She was an exemplary religious. She was gentle, calm, kind, a tireless worker, never wearying when it came to schedules and advising students. She was indeed selfless in bringing each student to her desired goals. Her memory was phenominal (sic) and her mind functioned better than the computer - so the students thought. Since 1971 Sister had resided at the Marian Convent and served part-time at the college. Sister was the daughter of the late Martin and Mary Ann Fannon Caulfield and a sister of the late Rev. Eugene Caulfield and Elizabeth Caulfield. Several nieces and nephews also survive. She was born in Honesdale, Pa. May God grant her a great harvest for His eternal keeping."
A former student wrote --- "Sister Marie Eugene and all her Sisters in humility unsung, have borne the crosses of the many students who have lovingly been passed through their fingers, a living rosary."
