Sister M. Conrad Schaefer, IHM

Sister M. Conrad Schaefer, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Tuesday, August 11, 1998 at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

She was born on January 21, 1903 in Dickson City, Pennsylvania, and given the name Cecilia. She was the daughter of the late Adolph and Margaret Loch Schaefer.  She entered the IHM Congregation on October 2, 1928, made her temporary profession of vows on April 14, 1931, and final profession was August 1, 1934.

Sister Conrad served as a teacher in the following schools: St. Thomas Aquinas Elementary School in Archbald, PA, from 1941 to 1946; St. Joseph Elementary School in Williamsport, PA, from 1946 to 1947; St. Cecilia Elementary School in Exeter, PA, from 1947 to 1949; Pocono Central Catholic Elementary School in Cresco, PA, from 1965 to 1968, St. Leo Elementary School in Ashley, PA, from 1968 to 1969; and St. Clare Elementary School in Scranton, PA, from 1973 to 1974; St. Mary Elementary School in Altoona, PA; St. Mary Elementary School in Patton, PA; Holy Trinity Elementary School in Poughkeepsie, NY; St. Ambrose Elementary School in Bridgeport, CT; as well as at schools located in Pittsburgh, PA; Manhasset, NY; and Baltimore, MD. 

Sister also served as faculty of the summer art program at Marywood College in Scranton, PA, from 1952 to 1957; and on the support staff at the Marian Convent, from 1974 to 1986.

From 1986 until the time of her death, Sister Conrad served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.

She held a Bachelor of Science degree in education from Marywood College.

She was preceded in death by four sisters, Sr. M. Evangelist, IHM, Marie Schreck, Gertrude Smith, Margarite Leper; and three brothers Carl, John and James.

She is survived by sister, Mrs. Sally McKercher of Endwell, NY; nieces and nephews; grandnieces and grandnephews.

The funeral will be Saturday, August 15 at 10:30 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at the Marian Convent, followed by interment at St. Catherine's Cemetery in Moscow. Pennsylvania.  Friends may call at the Marian Convent on Friday, August 14, after 2:00 p.m.
