Sister M. Augustus McLaughlin, IHM

Sister M. Augustus McLaughlin, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, died Sunday, December 4, 1983 at Moses Taylor Hospital in Scranton, Pennsylvania, after an illness.

She was born on November 4, 1896 in Bedford, Pennsylvania, and given the name Catherine. She was the daughter of the late John L. and Margaret Beatty McLaughlin.  She entered the IHM Congregation on July 1, 1922, received the religious habit on December 28, 1922, and made profession of her vows on December 29, 1924.

Sister Augustus served as a math and science teacher at the following schools: Marywood Seminary in Scranton, PA; Most Holy Rosary High School in Syracuse, NY; St. Dominic High School in Oyster Bay, NY; St. Patrick High School in Scranton, PA; and Our Lady of Peace Elementary School in Clark's Green, PA.  She served on the faculty of the science department at Marywood College in Scranton, PA, for several years beginning in 1941.

Sister served as a principal and superior at St. Rose High School in Carbondale, PA, and St. Mary High School in Manhasset, NY.

From 1978 until the time of her death, Sister Augustus served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent in Scranton, PA.

She is preceded in death by five  brothers, William T., Frank J., Spencer G., John B., and Charles P., two sisters, Anna and Margaret (Marguertie) Taylor, and a niece in community, Sister M. Agnessa McLaughlin, IHM.

She is survived by several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be Wednesday with Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in the Marian Convent chapel. Interment will follow at St. Catherine's Cemetery, Moscow, Pennsylvania. Friends may call at the Marian Convent Tuesday afternoon or evening.
