Sister M. Juliana Kelley, IHM

Sister M. Juliana Kelley, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Saturday, September 17, 1977, at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania

She was born on February 18, 1896 in Scranton, Pennsylvania, and given the name Lucille Agatha.  She was the daughter of the late Patrick J. and Julia Butler Kelley.  She entered the IHM Congregation on January 6, 1915, received the religious habit on July 6, 1915, and made profession of her vows on August 2, 1917.

Sister Juliana served as a teacher in the following IHM schools: Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Elementary School in Altoona, PA, from 1918 to 1919; St. Cecilia Academy in Scranton, PA, from 1919 to 1929; St. Mary of the Mount Elementary School in Pittsburgh, PA,  from 1929 to 1935 and 1942 to 1945; Holy Rosary Elementary School in Scranton, PA,  from 1935 to 1939; St. Joseph Elementary School in Williamsport, PA, from 1939 to 1941; St. Joseph Elementary School in Renovo, PA,  from 1941 to 1942; St. Mary Elementary School in Avoca, PA,  from 1945 to 1947; Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Elementary School in Forest Hills, NY, from 1947 to 1954; St. Patrick in Scranton, PA,  from 1954 to 1959; St. Paul Elementary School in Scranton, PA,  from 1955 to 1959; St. John the Evangelist Elementary School in Pittston, PA, from 1959 to 1965; St. Matthew Elementary School in East Stroudsburg, PA, from 1959 to 1965; and St. Joseph Elementary School in Danville, PA, from 1965 to 1968.  

From 1968 until the time of her death, Sister Juliana served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.

She received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Marywood College.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Joseph, and a sister Sister Mary Borgia, RSM.

She is survived by four sisters, Miss Clare Kelley, Mrs. Mary Kelly, Mrs. Rita Campion, and Mrs. Margaret Lally all of Scranton, PA, a brother, Thomas of Silver Spring, MD, and several nieces and nephews, including Reverend E. Francis Kelly, assistant pastor of St. Thomas Aquinas Parish in Archbald, PA.

The funeral will be Tuesday, September 20 at the Marian Convent.  Interment will follow at St. Catherine's Cemetery in Moscow, Pennsylvania.  Friends may call all day Monday at the Marian Convent.
