Sister Mary Ernest Hartmann, IHM

Sister Mary Ernest Hartmann, IHM, of the Congregation of Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, died Saturday, December 23, 1989 at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania, after an illness.

She was born on December 16, 1902 in Jewell, New York, and given the name Thelma Martina. She was the daughter of the late Ernest Henry and Anna Martina (Lena) McCormack Hartmann.  She entered the IHM Congregation on October 11, 1926, received the religious habit on December 29, 1926, and made profession of her vows on January 2, 1929.

Sister Mary Ernest served as a music teacher at the following schools: Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Elementary School in Forest Hills, NY, in 1929; St. Rose Elementary School in Carbondale, PA, in 1929; Marywood Seminary in Scranton, PA, from 1929 to 1931; St. Thomas Aquinas Elementary School in Ashville, PA, from 1931 to 1936; St. John High School in Susquehanna, PA, from 1936 to 1937; St. Mary of the Assumption in Upper Marlboro, MD, from 1937 to 1938; St. Joseph High School in Renovo, PA, from 1938 to 1944; St. Dominic Elementary School in Oyster Bay, NY, from 1944 to 1945; St. Agnes Elementary School in Lock Haven, PA, from 1950 to 1953; St. Charles Borromeo Elementary School in Sugar Notch, PA, from 1953 to 1957; Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Elementary School in Altoona, PA, from 1950 to 1960 and 1961 to 1966; St. Ambrose Elementary School in Bridgeport, CT, from 1960 to 1961; St. Michael's Industrial School for Boys in Hoban Heights, PA, from 1966 to 1969; and Immaculate Conception Elementary School in Scranton, PA, from 1969 to 1970.

Sister Mary Ernest also served as a nursing assistant at the Marian Convent, from 1970 to 1974.

From 1974 until the time of her death, she served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Ernest Henry, Jr. and a sister, Mildred Anna.

She is survived by nieces, and a nephew.

The funeral will be Wednesday, December 27 with Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. in the Marian Convent chapel. Interment will follow at Saint Catherine's Cemetery, Moscow, Pennsylvania. Friends may call at the Marian Convent Tuesday afternoon or evening.
