Sister M. Agnessa McLaughlin, IHM

Sister M. Agnessa McLaughlin, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on January 16, 1968 at St. Joseph's Hospital in Carbondale, Pennsylvania.

She was born on March 14, 1901 in Bedford, Pennsylvania, and given the name Miriam. She was the daughter of the late John B. and Miriam O. Beegle McLaughlin. She entered the IHM Congregation on June 21, 1922, received the religious habit on December 28, 1922, and made profession of her vows on December 29, 1924.

Sister Agnessa served as a teacher at the following schools: St. Patrick School in Scranton, PA, from 1923 to 1933; St. Patrick School in Oneida, NY, from 1933 to 1941; St. Ann School in Scranton, PA, from 1941 to 1949; South Scranton Catholic High School in Scranton, PA, from 1953 to 1955; and St. John School in Susquehanna, PA, from 1956 to 1957. She served as a catechetical instructor at St. Hugh Catechetical Center in Hughesville, PA, from 1949 to 1953.

Sister also served in the business office at St. Joseph's Shelter in Scranton, PA, from 1955 to 1956.  

From 1957 until the time of her death, Sister Agnessa served as a prayer minister.

She was preceded in death by a brother James (infant), and two sisters Ruth (infant) and Rose Hermains.

She is survived by four sisters, Kathleen Pretz, Helen Mary Brogan, Mary Irene O'Shea and Sara Stevens, four brothers, John Lewis, Charles B., Thomas, and Patrick Michael, nieces and nephews, and an aunt in community, Sister M. Augustus McLaughlin, IHM.

Interment is at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, Pennsylvania.
