Sister M. Huberta O'Neill, IHM

Sister M. Huberta O'Neill, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Saturday, June 30, 2001 at the Marian Convent, Scranton, Pennsylvania.

She was born on November 12, 1904 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and given the name Anne Magdalene. She was the daughter of the late James F. and Mary Ann Mason O'Neill. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1924, made temporary profession of her vows on August 15, 1926, and final profession of her vows on February 8, 1930.

Sister Huberta served as a teacher at the following schools: St. Basil High School in Dushore, PA, from 1927 to 1931; St. Patrick High School in Olyphant, PA, from 1931 to 1939; St. Leo High School in Ashley, PA, from 1939 to 1940; St. Joseph High School in Williamsport, PA, from 1940 to 1944; St. Paul High School in Scranton, PA, from 1956 to 1957; Kingston Catholic High School in Kingston, PA, from 1967 to 1971; St. John the Evangelist High School in Pittston, PA, from 1971 to 1975; Bishop Neumann High School in Williamsport, PA, from 1975 to 1978; Most Holy Rosary School in Syracuse, NY; St. Mary High School in Manhasset, NY; and St. Rosalia High School in Pittsburgh, PA.

Sister served as a prayer minister first at St. Rosalia Convent in Pittsburgh, PA, from 1982 to 1988, and then at the Marian Convent from 1988 until the time of her death.

She earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in French/Latin from Marywood College. She also did graduate studies in French at Fordham University and Assumption College.

She is preceded in death by five brothers, James Jr., Thomas, Francis Joseph, Valen and Henry, and by three sisters,  Elizabeth Grace Wright, Cecelia Caldwell and Marguerite.

She is survived by five nieces, Dorothy Hunt of Boynton Beach, FL, Eileen Caldwell of Sharon, PA, Ruth Epstein of Sharon, PA, and Kathy Serio of Pine Brook, FL.

The funeral will be Friday, July 6 at 10:30 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at the Marian Convent, celebrated by her grandnephew, Rev. William Hunt, followed by interment at St. Catherine Cemetery, Moscow. Friends may call at the Marian Convent on Thursday, July 5, between 2:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.
