Sister M. Patricia Cavanagh, IHM

Sister M. Patricia Cavanagh, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Sunday, August 8, 1976, at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

She was born on May 12, 1900, in Scranton, Pennsylvania, and given the name Marcella Marian. She was the daughter of the late Patrick Aloysius  and Mary Agnes Gorman Cavanagh/Cavanaugh.  She entered the IHM Congregation on September 20, 1925, received the religious habit on December 28, 1925, and made profession of her vows on December 28, 1927.

Sister Patricia served as a teacher in the following schools: St. Mary Elementary School in Manhasset, NY, from 1928 to 1935; Most Holy Rosary Elementary School in Syracuse, NY, from 1935 to 1941; St. Ann Elementary School in Scranton, PA, from 1941 to 1942; St. Alphonsus Elementary School in New York City, from 1942 to 1944; Most Holy Regional Catholic Grammar School in Mt. Holly, NJ; from 1944 to 1949; Holy Rosary Elementary School in Scranton, PA, from 1949 to 1952; St. Rose Elementary School in Carbondale, PA, from 1952 to 1958; St. Peter of Alcantara Elementary School in Port Washington, NY, from 1958 to 1962; St. Mary of the Mount Elementary School in Pittsburgh, PA, from 1962 to 1964; and Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Elementary School in Forest Hills, NY, from 1964 to 1974. 

From 1974 until the time of her death, Sister Patricia served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.

She is preceded in death by three brothers, Francis, Walter and Aloysius, and a sister, Jean Gavin.

She is survived by two sisters, Sister Maria Walter, IHM, and Marie both of Scranton PA, a brother, Patrick of Florida, and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be on Wednesday, August 11 with Mass at 9:30 am in the Marian Convent Chapel. Interment will follow at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, Pennsylvania.  Friends may call on Monday and Tuesay afternoon, from 2:00 - 4:00 pm.

Sister M. Patricia Cavanaugh, IHM, died Sunday in the Marian Convent.

Born in Scranton, daughter of the late Patrick and Mary Agnes Gorman Cavanaugh, she entered the congregation Sept. 20, 1925, and was professed on Dec. 28, 1927.  She has been an elementary school teacher at Holy Rosary, St. Rose, Carbondale, and several schools in New York and New Jersey.

Surviving are two sisters, Sister Maria Walter, IHM, at the Marian Convent, and Miss Marie Cavanaugh, Scranton; a brother, Patrick, in Florida.

The funeral will be on Wednesday, August 11 with Mass at 9:30 am in the Marian Convent Chapel. Interment, St. Catherine’s Cemetery, Moscow.  Viewing at the Marian Convent today and Tuesday."
