Sister M. Herberta Burns, IHM

Sister M. Herberta Burns, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on June 24, 1985 at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania, after an illness.

Born on July 3, 1918 in Newark, New Jersey, she was the daughter of the late Herbert and Elizabeth Corcoran Burns. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1936, received the religious habit on May 3, 1937, and made profession of her vows on May 8, 1939.

As a teacher of Latin and social studies, Sister Herberta served at the following high schools: St. John the Evangelist in Pittston; and Most Holy Rosary in Syracuse, NY; St. Patrick Cathedral High School, New York City; as well as schools located in Pittsburgh and Altoona, PA; and New York. 

Sister served as principal and superior at Most Holy Rosary, Syracuse, New York; and at St. John the Evangelist in Pittston.

From 1984 until the time of her death, Sister Herberta served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.

She is survived by three brothers, John Burns of East Norwich, New York; Frank of West Palm Beach, Florida; and Vincent of Juno Beach, Florida; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be Wednesday with Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. in the Marian Convent chapel. Interment will be at St. Catherine's Cemetery, Moscow, Pennsylvania. Friends may call at the Marian Convent on Tuesday afternoon or evening.
