Sister M. Herberta Burns, IHM

Sister M. Herberta Burns, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Monday, June 24, 1985 at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania, after an illness.

She was born on July 3, 1918 in Newark, New Jersey, and was the daughter of the late Herbert and Elizabeth Corcoran Burns. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1936, received the religious habit on May 3, 1937, and made profession of her vows on May 8, 1939.

As a teacher of Latin and social studies, Sister Herberta served at the following schools: St. John the Evangelist High School in Pittston, PA; Most Holy Rosary High School in Syracuse, NY; St. Patrick Cathedral High School, New York City, NY; as well as at high schools located in Pittsburgh and Altoona, PA, and New York state. 

Sister served as principal and superior at Most Holy Rosary High School in Syracuse, New York, and at St. John the Evangelist High School in Pittston, PA.

From 1984 until the time of her death, Sister Herberta served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.

She is survived by three brothers, John of East Norwich of NY, Frank of West Palm Beach of FL, and Vincent of Juno Beach, FL, and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be Wednesday, June 26 with Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. at the Marian Convent Chapel, interment will follow at St. Catherine's Cemetery, Moscow, Pennsylvania. Friends may call at the Marian Convent on Tuesday afternoon or evening.
