Sister Dorothy Welsh, IHM

Sister Dorothy Welsh, IHM, (formerly known as  Sister M. Joseph Gabriel) of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, died on Thursday, March 9, 1989, at St. Joseph's Hospital in Carbondale, PA, after an illness.

Daughter of the late John T. and Margaret Jordan Welsh, she was born on October 24, 1908 in Scranton, PA. She entered the IHM Congregation on August 14, 1927, received the religious habit on December 28, 1927, and made profession of her vows on December 27, 1929.

Sister Dorothy served as a teacher at Mother of Mercy School in Washington, NC, for twenty years.  She also served as a teacher at schools located in Maryland and Pennsylvania.

Sister Dorothy served as principal at the following schools: St. Monica Elementary School in Raleigh, NC; Our Lady of Peace Elementary School in Clarks Green, PA; and St. Leo Elementary School in Ashley, PA.

Sister also served on the support staff at the Marian Convent in Scranton, PA, from 1980 to 1988.

From 1988 until the time of her death, she served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.

She is preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters.

She is survived by a nephew, and cousins.

The funeral will be Monday, March 13 with Mass of Christian Burial in the Marian Convent Chapel at 10 a.m. Interment will be at St. Catherine's Cemetery, Moscow, Pennsylvania.  Friends may call on Sunday afternoon after 2:00 p.m. at the Marian Convent.
