Sister Margaret Maria Guenter, IHM

Sister Margaret Maria Guenter, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, died on Monday, February 2, 1981 at St. Dominic's Convent in Oyster Bay, New York.

She was born on September 27, 1904 in New York City, NY, and was given the name Marie.  She was the daughter of the late John K. and Marie Troester Guenter.  She entered the IHM Congregation on February 2, 1923, received the religious habit on August 15, 1923, and made profession of her vows on August 15, 1925.

Sister Margaret Maria served as a teacher at the following schools: St. Ann High School in Scranton, PA; Holy Rosary High School in Scranton; Cathedral High School in Scranton, PA; St. Mary High School in Pittston, PA; St. John the Evangelist High School in Pittston, PA; Laure Hill Academy in Susquehanna, PA; Bishop O'Reilly High School in Kingston, PA; St. Ephrem High School in Brooklyn, NY; Immaculata High School in Manhattan, NY; and St. Dominic High School in Oyster Bay, NY.

At the time of her death, Sister Margaret Maria was serving as a guidance counselor at St. Dominic High School in Oyster Bay, NY.

She is preceded in death by two sisters, Margaret and Elizabeth B.

She is survived by a sister, Sister Maria Jeanne, IHM, a teacher at St. Mary School in Manhasset, NY, and cousins.

The funeral will be Thursday, February 5 with Mass of Christian Burial at St. Dominic's Church, Oyster Bay, NY at 10:30 a.m. Interment will be at St. Catherine's Cemetery, Moscow, Pennsylvania. Friends may call at St. Dominic's Convent, Oyster Bay, on Wednesday afternoon or evening.

Archival Remembrance:

Sister Margaret Maria Guenter, died on Monday, February 2, 1981, the 58th anniversary of her entrance into the Congregation. Stationed at St. Dominic Convent, Oyster Bay, NY, she died of an apparent heart attack.  As a teacher of upper grades and high school, Sister Margaret Maria served on the faculty of schools located in Pennsylvania and New York. At the time of her death she was doing part-time counseling at St. Dominic High School in Oyster Bay, NY.
