Sister M. Henrita McArdle, IHM

Sister M. Henrita McArdle, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Friday, January 8, 1999 at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

She was born on August 17, 1913 in Masontown, PA, and given the name Gertrude. She was the daughter of the late Edward and Mary Ellen Ahearn McArdle. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1932, made her temporary profession of vows on April 30, 1935, and final profession of her vows on August 2, 1938.

Sister Henrita served as a music teacher at the following schools: Epiphany Elementary School in Sayre, PA, from 1943 to 1945; St. Matthew Elementary School in East Stroudsburg, PA, from 1945 to 1949; St. Patrick Elementary School in Scranton, PA, from 1949 to 1950; St. Leo Elementary School in AshleyPA, from 1954 to 1956; St. Patrick Elementary School in OlyphantPA, from 1962 to 1967; St. Mary of Mount Carmel Elementary School in Dunmore, PA, from 1974 to 1976; and St. Patrick Elementary School in ScrantonPA, from 1976 to 197. She also served as a private music teacher at St. Cecelia Convent in ExeterPA, from 1984 to 1988.

Sister also served as a parish musician at St. Mary's Church in Pittston, PA, from 1982 to 1984.

Sister Henrita served in prayer ministry at St. Rocco's Convent in Pittston, PA, from 1988 to 1990, and at the Marian Convent from 1990 until the time of her death.

She earned a Bachelor of Music degree in piano from Marywood College.

She was preceded in death by three sisters, Sister M. Anna Theresa, IHM, Sister M. Alverna, IHM, and Anna, and three brothers, Patrick Joseph, Edward A., and Rev. Henry, OSA.

She is survived by two sisters, Sister Michael, IHM of Scranton, PA, and Cecilia Maher of Chicago, IL; a brother, Michael of Ford City, PA; and many nieces and nephews. 

The funeral will be Tuesday, February 12 at 10:30 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at the Marian Convent, followed by interment at St. Catherine's Cemetery, Moscow. Friends may call at the Marian Convent on Monday between 2:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.
