Sister M. Paulinus Sullivan, IHM

Sister M. Paulinus Sullivan, of the Congregation of Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, died Thursday, May 3, 1979, at St. Joseph's Hospital, Carbondale, Pennsylvania, after an extended illness.

Daughter of the late John B. and Elizabeth Wunder Sullivan, she was born on March 3, 1899 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1918, received the religious habit on August 2, 1919, and made profession of her vows on August 2, 1921.

Sister Paulinus served as a teacher at St. Ann School in Scranton, PA, and St. Patrick School in Oneida, NY.

Sister Paulinus served as a faculty member of the English Department of Marywood College in Scranton, PA, where she served also as Chairman of the Department from 1963 to 1968.

She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree at Marywood College, and went on to acquire an Master of Arts degree and Ph.D. in English at Fordham University. She is best remembered for her lyric poetry, much of which is collected in two books, Sabbath and Wide to His Weather, which she co-authored with her sister, Sister M. Davida Sullivan, IHM.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, John and Robert; and a sister, Sister M. Monice Sullivan, IHM.

She is survived by five sisters, Sister M. Davida Sullivan, IHM, of Scranton; Miss Katharine Sullivan; Mrs. Marie Maloy; Mrs. Eleanor Alton; and Mrs. Betty Jane Franz, all of Pittsburgh; and a brother, Reverend Edward  P. Sullivan, SJ, who is Chaplain at Manhattan State Hospital, Ward Island, NY; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be Monday, May 7, with Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. in the Marian Convent Chapel. Interment will be at St. Catherine Cemetery, Moscow, PA. Friends may call at the Marian Convent on Saturday evening, Sunday afternoon and evening.
