Sister M. Elphege Lowry, IHM

Sister M. Elphege Lowry, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Tuesday, October 21, 1975, at Mercy Hospital in Scranton, PA.

She was born on November 22, 1902 in in the Minooka (Irish) section of Scranton, PA; and given the name Cecilia. She was the daughter of the late Peter and Mary Coyne Lowry, and was one of seven girls and two boys. She entered the Congregation on September 7, 1928, received the holy habit on April 1, 1929, and made her profession of vows on April 14, 1931.

Sister  Elphege served as a teacher at the following schools: St. Ann High School in Scranton, PA; St. Alphonsus Commercial High School in New York City, NY; Most Holy Rosary High School in Syracuse, NY; St. John High School in Pittston, PA; St. Rosalia High School in Pittsburgh, PA; and St. Paul High School in Scranton, PA. 

Sister Elphege then went on to teach at Marywood College in Scranton, and was the chair for the Graduate Education/Guidance department, from 1973 to 1974. 

She is preceded in death by two brothers, and three sisters.

She is survived by three sisters, Mrs. Catherine Lydon, Miss Mary Lowry, and Mrs. Theresa Ruane, all of Scranton; nieces and nephews.

The funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Mary of the Assumption Church on River Street in Scranton on Thursday, October 23, at 9:30 a.m.   Visitation will be held on Wednesday, October 22 at the IHM Convent, 422 River Street, Scranton from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.  Interment will follow at St. Catherine Cemetery, Moscow.
